MAT (two-year Master of Arts in Teaching)

This program is designed for individuals who have a) completed a content degree in a field related to the area of certification, b) content requirements that are not met through the undergraduate program, and/or c) completed the undergraduate degree more than 1 year before admission.

MAT Program Design

Typically a two-year program

  • Education coursework (20 hours)
  • Content, some students must complete prerequisite work (12 hours)
  • Content area methods and field experience (4 hours)
  • Internship and capstone (9 hours)

WISE Stipends / Scholarships for MAT Students

  • Will receive $5000 per fall and spring term for up to four terms Paid as stipend or scholarship
  • Student remains eligible for graduate assistantships and teacher-focused grant programs

General Information for all WISE Scholars

  • The program will provide extra support/mentoring during internship and first year of teaching
  • Scholars will receive memberships in state and national professional organizations for three years (www.southcarolinascience.org, www.nsta.org, www.scctm.org, www.nctm.org)
  • Scholar must teach in a high-need school one year for every $5000 they receive
  • Opportunities for participation in recruitment and summer program as mentors
  • Opportunities to attend state professional conference participation even after graduation
